OPENING NIGHT: Ledisi for Dinah / José James / Spilata / DJ Kultured Child
Wed Jun 10 · 6pm · Manhattan
On the opening night of its 40th Anniversary season, SummerStage and the Blue Note Jazz Festival will showcase a supreme talent paying homage to jazz and R&B legend Dinah Washington. GRAMMY-winning vocalist Ledisi will perform selections from her new album For Dinah, an 8-song tribute to genre trailblazer Dinah Washington, who breathed new life into R&B in the ‘50s and ‘60s with her gospel, jazz, and blues roots, influencing the likes of Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, and more. The album is “a love letter to a beautiful Black woman who has inspired me. Made Me,” said Ledisi, who imbues Washington’s classics such as “This Bitter Earth,” and “What a Difference a Day Made,” with her own neo-soul and contemporary jazz stylings. Also appearing on the program is SummerStage alumnus José James, a jazz artist with a hip-hop soul who’s been blurring genre lines with his rich baritone since his 2008 debut album The Dreamer. His latest work is focused on connecting the dots between soul, hip-hop, disco, funk, jazz, and jazz-adjacent styles of 2024’s 1978 and last year’s 1978: Revenge of the Dragon. Like Ledisi, James has also been known to pay tribute to his forebears, dedicating sessions to the likes of Billie Holiday, Bill Withers, and Erykah Badu. Rounding out the lineup is Spilata, a jazz vocalist and songwriter who’s already made his mark at classic venues such as Birdland, Minton’s Playhouse, and Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Multi-talented DJ and producer of Milestones: Celebrating the Culture podcast Angélika Beener aka DJ Kultured Child is on the ones and twos. Brass Queens will perform a 2nd line through the venue prior to the beginning of the show.

During the 2026 season, the PuppetMobile will present a fresh take on the classic fairytale Pinocchio written by Julia Darden and directed by Bruce Cannon, with set design by Zlata Godunova and costume design by Charlie DelRisco. In this new telling, Geppetto is a New York City kid with a talent for invention, going as far as creating a robot friend in the form of Pinocchio. The story follows the pair as they tour around classic locales, from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park to the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park, and the hijinks they get into along the way. The production features hand-made marionettes crafted by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre puppet builder Kevin White. In addition to the artistry of the production, viewers will be treated to original songs written and orchestrated by Daryl Kojak performed by the marionettes.

This is a love story. It's hands that smell of Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue after days spent clutching fistfuls of her hair. It's the rain hitting the earth in a way that reminds you of blood, that makes you think the world's holding a knife to your underwear. It's the spins. It's running out of air because you gulped too much of it while you were sobbing. It's waking up hot and sticky. It's desperately falling in love with your best friend inside a camping tent while everything outside rages.

This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis and Clark
Mon Jun 15 · 6pm
Join The Explorers Club on Monday, June 15th, to hear an innovative and richly illustrated account of the Lewis and Clark expedition — from award-winning author Craig Fehrman, as part of the release of his groundbreaking book This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis and Clark. Exploration is often about navigating people as much as rugged landscapes, a lesson Lewis and Clark had to learn again and again during their famous expedition. One of the best examples — and certainly the most exciting — centered on the captains’ tense encounter with the Lakota. In this lecture, which will showcase new documents, old maps, historic paintings, and material objects from Native culture, Craig Fehrman will zoom in on this four-day meeting and reconstruct it from both the American and Lakota points of view. Both sides were well armed, and both sides wanted something from the other, starting with the explorer’s most important currency, information. Fehrman will draw on oral history, the captains’ million-word journals, and his own incisive analysis to show how and why this encounter spiraled into a dangerous, high-stakes problem for both parties — and how, in the end, a leader named Black Buffalo was the person to solve it. This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A. Copies of Craig’s book will be available for purchase before and after the presentation. RESERVATIONS This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters. In-person tickets are $20 for Members, and $35 for the General Public. Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Sistema Calera: A Late Pleistocene Karst Archive
Mon Jun 22 · 6pm
Join The Explorers Club on June 22nd to uncover a treasure trove of Pleistocene fossils lying deep in a cave system in eastern Mexico. Deep within the limestone systems of eastern Mexico, Sistema Calera preserves a rare and dynamic record of the Late Pleistocene. What was once thought to be a small and relatively unremarkable cave has revealed itself, through continued exploration, to contain hundreds of fossil remains, including mammoth, bison, camelids, and dire wolf, distributed across more than a kilometer of mapped passage. This presentation follows the evolving investigation of the cave, from its initial biological interest to the expanding geological and paleontological significance uncovered through fieldwork, mapping, and the use of underwater ROV technology. Rather than a static deposit, the cave appears to function as a long-term karst system shaped by seasonal flooding, sediment transport, and complex preservation processes. Through imagery, field observations, and ongoing analysis, this talk explores how these remains accumulated, what the cave reveals about past environments, and how modern tools are allowing access to areas beyond safe human reach. Sistema Calera raises as many questions as it answers, offering not a finished story, but a developing archive of deep time still being uncovered. This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A. RESERVATIONS This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters. In-person tickets are $20 for Members, and $35 for the General Public. Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm

The Book of George
Mon Jun 29 · 6pm
The Book of George: Mentorship, Storytelling, and the Wild Places That Shape Us The Book of George is a short documentary about mentorship, identity, and the life-changing power of access to the natural world. Rooted in George McKenzie Jr.’s journey from Brooklyn to the backcountry of Florida, the film explores how relationships, storytelling, and wild places can help shape a person’s path and sense of purpose. Through intimate moments and a deeply personal lens, the film reflects on what it means to be seen, guided, and challenged into becoming more of yourself. It also highlights the importance of conservation not only as an environmental issue, but as a human one—connected to belonging, opportunity, healing, and legacy. This program at The Explorers Club will feature a screening of The Book of George, followed by a conversation with George McKenzie Jr. about the making of the film, the role mentorship has played in his life, and how storytelling can help people connect more deeply with nature and one another. At its heart, The Book of George is about more than one person’s story. It is about what becomes possible when someone is invited into a world they never thought they could belong to. This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A. RESERVATIONS This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters. In-person tickets are $20 for Members, and $35 for the General Public. Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm FILM CREDITS Director: Danny Schmidt Executive Producers: Mallory Lykes Dimmitt, Alex Wallace, Julie Wallace, Hayley Nenadal Producers: George McKenzie Jr, Clay Barron, Danny Schmidt Produced by Pure Gold Picture in association with SLOMotion Film Presented by The Los Angeles Times Supported by Stio, Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, CREW Land and Water Trust
