This exhibition addresses these quickly evolving mass mediums, treating the screen as both medium and infrastructure in a playful space for works-in-progress, prototypes, and other experiments. OPENING NIGHT: Ledisi for Dinah / José James / Spilata / DJ Kultured Child
Wed Jun 10 · 6pm · Manhattan
On the opening night of its 40th Anniversary season, SummerStage and the Blue Note Jazz Festival will showcase a supreme talent paying homage to jazz and R&B legend Dinah Washington. GRAMMY-winning vocalist Ledisi will perform selections from her new album For Dinah, an 8-song tribute to genre trailblazer Dinah Washington, who breathed new life into R&B in the ‘50s and ‘60s with her gospel, jazz, and blues roots, influencing the likes of Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, and more. The album is “a love letter to a beautiful Black woman who has inspired me. Made Me,” said Ledisi, who imbues Washington’s classics such as “This Bitter Earth,” and “What a Difference a Day Made,” with her own neo-soul and contemporary jazz stylings. Also appearing on the program is SummerStage alumnus José James, a jazz artist with a hip-hop soul who’s been blurring genre lines with his rich baritone since his 2008 debut album The Dreamer. His latest work is focused on connecting the dots between soul, hip-hop, disco, funk, jazz, and jazz-adjacent styles of 2024’s 1978 and last year’s 1978: Revenge of the Dragon. Like Ledisi, James has also been known to pay tribute to his forebears, dedicating sessions to the likes of Billie Holiday, Bill Withers, and Erykah Badu. Rounding out the lineup is Spilata, a jazz vocalist and songwriter who’s already made his mark at classic venues such as Birdland, Minton’s Playhouse, and Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Multi-talented DJ and producer of Milestones: Celebrating the Culture podcast Angélika Beener aka DJ Kultured Child is on the ones and twos. Brass Queens will perform a 2nd line through the venue prior to the beginning of the show.

Eine Verdichtung (Fissures. A Distillation), the Austrian duo mina mas presents an interdisciplinary song cycle that brings the classical art song into direct dialogue with the realities of the 21st century. Historical works encounter electronic soundscapes, improvisation, and newly composed material, creating a dense musical reflection on freedom, overload, crisis, and the search for connection in a digital age.

About the Concert

At the core of Risse. Eine Verdichtung (Fissures. A Distillation) lies a rethinking of the traditional “Lied”. Songs by Fanny Hensel, Johanna Kinkel, Kaija Saariaho, Franz Schubert, Clara Schumann, Arnold Schoenberg, Jean Sibelius, and Richard Strauss are interwoven with interventions, arrangements, improvisations, and original compositions by mina mas. Classical and contemporary music merge, are fractured, and reassembled into a cohesive narrative. Rigid gender roles that historically shaped the art-song repertoire are deliberately questioned and softened. The once-passive lyrical voice breaks free from conventional attributions, becoming active, multifaceted, and unsettling. Female and male composers stand side by side on equal footing, opening new perspectives on a familiar genre.

About the Artists

Michaela Resch, soprano, is an Austrian singer dedicated to unconventional approaches within classical music. During the 2026 season, the PuppetMobile will present a fresh take on the classic fairytale Pinocchio written by Julia Darden and directed by Bruce Cannon, with set design by Zlata Godunova and costume design by Charlie DelRisco. The story follows the pair as they tour around classic locales, from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park to the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park, and the hijinks they get into along the way. The production features hand-made marionettes crafted by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre puppet builder Kevin White. In addition to the artistry of the production, viewers will be treated to original songs written and orchestrated by Daryl Kojak performed by the marionettes.

Established in 1996 through a collaboration between the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the GEDENKDIENST association, and the Leo Baeck Institute New York, the project has documented more than three decades of personal histories through oral history interviews, questionnaires, and archival materials. As the generation of survivors and eyewitnesses passes away, the Austrian Heritage Collection is entering a new phase. Increasingly, the project engages with the children and relatives of emigrants and survivors – the so-called second generation – whose perspectives offer new insights into memory, identity, and the transmission of historical experience. This anniversary event serves both as a celebration of the Collection’s achievements and as a reflection on its future mission.

About the Event

Nina Glueckselig, Leonie Eidinger, and Beatrice Segal, all members of the second generation, will share the stories of their parents and families, whose lives were profoundly shaped by displacement, persecution, and migration. Their personal reflections explore what it means to carry forward family histories, preserve the memory of those who experienced Nazi persecution, and bear witness in an era increasingly removed from direct testimony. Together, the speakers will discuss the evolving role of the Austrian Heritage Collection, the responsibilities of remembrance across generations, and the importance of ensuring that these histories continue to resonate with future audiences.

This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis and Clark
Mon Jun 15 · 6pm
Join The Explorers Club on Monday, June 15th, to hear an innovative and richly illustrated account of the Lewis and Clark expedition — from award-winning author Craig Fehrman, as part of the release of his groundbreaking book This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis and Clark. Exploration is often about navigating people as much as rugged landscapes, a lesson Lewis and Clark had to learn again and again during their famous expedition. One of the best examples — and certainly the most exciting — centered on the captains’ tense encounter with the Lakota. In this lecture, which will showcase new documents, old maps, historic paintings, and material objects from Native culture, Craig Fehrman will zoom in on this four-day meeting and reconstruct it from both the American and Lakota points of view. Both sides were well armed, and both sides wanted something from the other, starting with the explorer’s most important currency, information. Fehrman will draw on oral history, the captains’ million-word journals, and his own incisive analysis to show how and why this encounter spiraled into a dangerous, high-stakes problem for both parties — and how, in the end, a leader named Black Buffalo was the person to solve it. This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A. Copies of Craig’s book will be available for purchase before and after the presentation. RESERVATIONS This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters. In-person tickets are $20 for Members, and $35 for the General Public. Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm

IN OUR PLACE | STAGED READING WITH THE SATC
Tue Jun 16 · 7pm · Scandinavia House, 58 Park Avenue, New York, NY, 10016, United States
In celebration of Scandinavia House’s 25th anniversary, SATC is proud to present a staged reading of In Our Place by acclaimed Norwegian playwright Arne Lygre. The reading will feature special guest actor Rakel Benér Gajdusek, who has worked regularly at Dramaten (The Royal Dramatic Theatre) in Stockholm since 2015. Astrid has shared a long and intimate friendship with Eva—a bond that has shaped them both. But when Astrid meets Sara, a fragile new connection begins to form, challenging the boundaries of their worlds. Who can they be to one another? Is it possible for them to hold a greater and more meaningful place in each other’s lives? In Our Place is a piercing exploration of the human need for connection: our desire to be seen, to hold space for one another, and to find our own identities reflected in the eyes of others. Beneath its delicate surface lies a quiet, universal fear: the dread of being left out, of being replaceable, and of ultimately ending up alone. Produced in Norway at Nationaltheatret in Oslo in 2023, at Den National Scene, Teaterkjelleren, Bergen in 2024 and as a touring production with Riksteatret in 2025, In Our Place also had a successful run at Stadsteatern, Stockholm in 2025. SATC has a long-standing history with Lygre’s work. In 2013, SATC produced a staged reading of his play Then Silence at Scandinavia House, which successfully developed into a full Off-Broadway production at Theatre Row in 2016. SATC is thrilled to bring Lygre’s latest powerful work to our audiences. Register

Sistema Calera: A Late Pleistocene Karst Archive
Mon Jun 22 · 6pm
Join The Explorers Club on June 22nd to uncover a treasure trove of Pleistocene fossils lying deep in a cave system in eastern Mexico. Deep within the limestone systems of eastern Mexico, Sistema Calera preserves a rare and dynamic record of the Late Pleistocene. What was once thought to be a small and relatively unremarkable cave has revealed itself, through continued exploration, to contain hundreds of fossil remains, including mammoth, bison, camelids, and dire wolf, distributed across more than a kilometer of mapped passage. This presentation follows the evolving investigation of the cave, from its initial biological interest to the expanding geological and paleontological significance uncovered through fieldwork, mapping, and the use of underwater ROV technology. Rather than a static deposit, the cave appears to function as a long-term karst system shaped by seasonal flooding, sediment transport, and complex preservation processes. Through imagery, field observations, and ongoing analysis, this talk explores how these remains accumulated, what the cave reveals about past environments, and how modern tools are allowing access to areas beyond safe human reach. Sistema Calera raises as many questions as it answers, offering not a finished story, but a developing archive of deep time still being uncovered. This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A. RESERVATIONS This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters. In-person tickets are $20 for Members, and $35 for the General Public. Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm

INVITATION TO TRANCE: AAPO NIKKANEN & RAUDIE MCLEOD
Tue Jun 23 · 6pm · Scandinavia House, 58 Park Avenue, New York, NY, 10016, United States
Join Scandinavia House and the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (FCINY) on June 23 for an evening with Finnish artist, researcher, and hypnotherapist Aapo Nikkanen! Nikkanen will be joined by composer and longtime collaborator Raudie McLeod to discuss their unique artistic practices and present their work through a group hypnosis session. *Please note: this event is for audiences 18+. Late entry will not be permitted.* Register ABOUT THE ARTISTS AAPO NIKKANEN is an artist, researcher, and a trained hypnotherapist. His current work focuses on hypnotic performances and photography. In 2024, he earned a hypnotherapist’s degree, and he runs a hypnotherapy cabinet in Paris. Alongside his artistic practice, Nikkanen researches and periodically writes about new technologies. In his performances, the guests visit speculative realities through hypnosis. The content of the pieces deals with the development of new technologies, their asymmetrical power concentration, and their potential political, ecological, and psychological impacts. The work of Nikkanen has been shown internationally for the past 10 years. His work has exhibited in numerous international institutions, including CAC Ivry – Le Crédac, Palais de Tokyo and GB Agency in Paris, New Performance Turku Biennale and Design Museum in Finland, Rotterdam International Film Festival, The Living Art Museum in Iceland, Casa Encendida in Madrid, and de Appel Art Center in Amsterdam. In 2016 co-founded Parisian art space and collective The Community, where he acted as the Director of Art until departing in 2020. RAUDIE MCLEOD is a classically trained orchestral percussionist whose early career was shaped by the music of modernist composers such as Frank Ticheli and Eric Whitacre, alongside percussion-and-minimalist pioneers Steve Reich and Philip Glass. McLeod has released several albums under various aliases and toured extensively as River Yarra. In 2023, he embarked on a new project, River Y, which can be characterized as less stylistically defined and more sonically open, drawing inspiration not only from contemporary music but from technological processes of the 21st century. The project is replete with repurposed audio snippets from viral or obscure social media posts which are then abstracted through technology ill fit for the purpose, taking artificially generated sound sources that are animated and mangled in his compositions. In addition to his personal work, Mcleod regularly scores for theater, film, and clients. His commissions and collaborators include Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Andreas Pappamikail, Aapo Nikkanen, and NTS Radio.

The Book of George
Mon Jun 29 · 6pm
The Book of George: Mentorship, Storytelling, and the Wild Places That Shape Us The Book of George is a short documentary about mentorship, identity, and the life-changing power of access to the natural world. Rooted in George McKenzie Jr.’s journey from Brooklyn to the backcountry of Florida, the film explores how relationships, storytelling, and wild places can help shape a person’s path and sense of purpose. Through intimate moments and a deeply personal lens, the film reflects on what it means to be seen, guided, and challenged into becoming more of yourself. It also highlights the importance of conservation not only as an environmental issue, but as a human one—connected to belonging, opportunity, healing, and legacy. This program at The Explorers Club will feature a screening of The Book of George, followed by a conversation with George McKenzie Jr. about the making of the film, the role mentorship has played in his life, and how storytelling can help people connect more deeply with nature and one another. At its heart, The Book of George is about more than one person’s story. It is about what becomes possible when someone is invited into a world they never thought they could belong to. This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A. RESERVATIONS This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters.
